Description
440C is a
high carbon martensitic stainless steel
, and is the highest carbon content from 400 stainless steel series. It is usually heat treated
to reach hardness of 58-60 HRC.
Hardening range is between 1850° and 1950° F. Quench large sections in oil. Small sections can be quenched in air. Temper to required hardness.
Full annealing range is between 1550° and 1650° F. Cool slowly in furnace. Low annealing range is between 1550° and 1650° F. Cool slowly in furnace.
Machinability is rated at 40% of B1112. Average cutting speed 65 ft/min. 440C has poor welding properties due to high carbon content. 440C has poor forming and stamping properties. 440C can be forged between 1900°-2100° F. Do not forge below 1650° F. Cool slowly.
It is a bearing steel, and used in rolling contact stainless bearings, e.g. ball and roller bearings, valve parts, surgical
instruments
,
nozzles,
wear parts of pumps, mold inserts,
chisels, and
knife blades.
440C resists scaling up to 1200° F in continuous service and resists corrosion from fresh water steam, crude oil, gasoline, and resists staining from fruit and food acids. Maximum resistance is obtained by hardening and polishing
