    Description

This is a wonderful 25 year old Hand Carved Djembe Drum is from West Africa. The Djembe is one of West Africa's best known instruments. This goblet-shaped drum is traditionally carved from a single piece of African hardwood and topped with an animal skin as a drum head. In western understanding, the drum belongs to the membranophone class of instruments in the percussion family. The name Djembe means to call the people together,as well as meaning "everyone gather together". A Djembe is a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands. The Djembe has a body (or shell) carved of hardwood and a drum head made of untreated rawhide, most commonly made from goatskin. The Djembe can produce a wide variety of sounds, making it a most versatile drum. The drum is very loud, allowing it to be heard clearly as a solo instrument over a large percussion ensemble. Traditionally, the Djembe is played only by men, as are the Dunun that always accompany the Djembe. This drum would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.
Shows some age and discoloration, but in good condition. Has a deep rich sound.
